The sculptural flower built for modern weddings.
Clean lines, sculptural form, and a thick wired stem you’d swear was real. The Calla Lily is the flower that defines minimalist luxury wedding cakes, and the first sugar flower most students reach for when they want to break out of “floral” into “architectural.”

What You'll Learn
The skills behind a sculptural sugar flower.
Different from a layered flower. A calla lily is about one perfect curved petal, one realistic centre, and one stem that holds its weight. Five core skills, taught from scratch.
01
Complex single-petal shaping
The curved, almost-twisted single petal that defines a calla lily. Rolling, cutting, and shaping technique that makes the difference between flat and sculptural.
02
Texturing without a veiner
Subtle ribbing along the petal, taught with the simplest of tools. No expensive silicone veiner required.
03
Building the spadix centre
The yellow-orange spike at the heart of the flower. Colour, shape, and the realistic pollen finish that pulls the whole thing together.
04
The thick wired stem
The calla lily’s signature trick. A stem that looks thick and substantial while staying lightweight on a cake. Wire prep, gum paste wrapping, taping.
05
Subtle dusting on white
Calla lilies are often near-white, which means dusting is where they earn their realism. Building up subtle greens, soft creams, and the faintest blush, without ever looking dirty.
Why The Calla Lily
The flower for couples who don't want a floral cake.
There’s a kind of bride who walks into a tasting and says “I love your work, but I don’t want flowers all over my cake.” She’s not anti-flower. She’s anti-fussy. What she wants is architectural. Sculptural. The single dramatic gesture instead of the cascading bouquet.
That bride wants a calla lily. Cleanly curved, almost minimalist, and the only flower that can carry a whole tier on its own. Three of them on a column-style wedding cake, and you’ve got the cover of every modern wedding magazine for the last five years.
“I use your sugar paste recipe consistently in any of my sugar work. I love how easy the recipe is.” · Kathy Brown · Academy student
The calla lily is also the easiest sculptural flower to master once you’ve made a few layered ones. If you’ve taken any of the rose courses, your hands already know what gum paste should feel like. This one is just one petal, one centre, one stem, but every single piece has to be perfect.

Your Teacher
Hi, I'm Alexandria.
I founded Finespun Cakes in Toronto in 2015 and have spent the last decade designing wedding cakes and teaching sugar flowers to over 1,000 students worldwide.
I trained at Le Cordon Bleu, studied under Ron Ben-Israel in New York, won an American Cake Award, and was named one of Wedluxe’s Top 10 Wedding Cake Designers in Canada.
My courses are taught the way I wish someone had taught me, with every step shown, no gatekeeping, and no rushing through the parts that actually matter.
a smarter way
Why buy one course when you could have all of them?
The Calla Lily is included in the Finespun Academy at $29/month, along with every other course, over 100 studio recipes, all seven studio tools, and live time with Alexandria every month.
After five months in the Academy, you’ve already gotten more than the price of this single course. Most members stay much longer.
