The Double Daffodil
What You'll Learn

The trumpet, the petals, the bright spring colour.

A double daffodil is two flowers in one: the central trumpet, and the wired double layer of petals around it. The skill is making both look balanced, and the colour work that keeps yellow looking joyful instead of cartoonish.
01

The signature trumpet centre

The distinctive cup at the heart of every daffodil. Rolling, frilling, and shaping a trumpet that looks like it grew that way, with the ruffled edge that’s unmistakable in finished photos.
02

Wired double-petal layers

The six outer petals taught as individually wired pieces, then a second inner layer that gives the “double” daffodil its fullness. Cleaner taping technique included so wired flowers stay light.
03

Spring yellow without the cartoon

Yellow is the hardest colour to dust well. Too saturated and it reads as plastic. Too pale and it reads as cream. The exact two-pass dusting that keeps it bright but believable.
04

Dusting & taping together

How dusting and taping work as one pass, not two. Coloured tape that disappears, dust applied in the right order, the finishing touches that elevate the build into the final flower.
05

Arrangement & pairings

Daffodils rarely stand alone on a wedding cake. The arrangement-recipe approach for pairing them with anemones, tulips, ranunculus, and spring greenery to build a balanced spring spray.

Why The Double Daffodil

The flower that ends winter on the cake.

By March every couple is asking the same thing: “Something spring.” And nothing says spring like a daffodil. They’re the first real flowers to come back, they’re the colour everyone associates with the season, and they’re absolutely flooding spring wedding editorials right now. A cake artist who can make a believable double daffodil owns the March-to-May calendar.
The double daffodil is also the technical step up from a regular daffodil. It’s two flowers in one build: a trumpet centre, and a wired double petal layer. Master it, and a dozen other spring flowers become easier, because the wired-layer technique transfers everywhere.
“Alexandria is an exceptional teacher, knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about her craft and about helping others master the techniques.” · Rachel Dolphin · Academy student
And the yellow problem is real. Most sugar daffodils look like rubber. The two-pass dusting technique in this course is the difference between “spring wedding” and “Easter craft project.”

What Students Say
“I have taken the Wedding Cake Challenge course, but it wasn’t until watching your gumpaste hydrangea video that I got the courage to create the flowers in this photo. Watching your How to Make an Elegant Organic Floral Piped Cake video also helped with this cake, which was for a wedding.”
Pauline Brinkman · Finespun Cakes Academy student
